What are Backlinks

Backlinks are a form of off-page SEO which forms an important element for increasing the visibility and authority of any website. However the main benefit of backlinks revolves around the search engines such as the mighty Google. Each link to your website is an indication that there is something useful or interesting to read at the end of that link. The more links from different websites to the same page or site is a strong indicator that the information is relevant and worthy of further investigation.

This fact is used by search engines to determine the importance of individual pages. This is especially true of Google and its much talked about Secret PageRank algorithm. This algorithm uses backlinks to calculate a number that the quality or authority of the page represents based upon the score given by the algorithm. The higher the score the greater page rank awarded by Google.

Unfortunately, not all backlinks have the same value as far as this algorithm is concerned.

At least 3 factors contribute to the value of any Backlinks

The first is the “nofollow” attribute, NoFollow links are placed by Humans for Humans and the search engines don’t follow these link and the link doesn’t contribute to the PageRank for that site.

The second factor is the PageRank of the page where the link can be found. Backlinks on pages with a Low rank are worth considerably less than backlinks on high authority sites with high page rank.

The third and final factor is the anchor text used in the Backlinks themselves. This is the text link that actually points to your page. Anchor text should be descriptive and should contain keywords that are relevant to the page it points to. You should avoid obvious anchor text such as “click here”, “go here” or “follow this link”. These carry very little keyword weight.

You should try and put your anchor text backlinks on other blogs, in forums, web directories, Web 2.0 0 pages like Squidoo lenses and Hub pages or a page that has something related to the page you are linking too.

The easiest way to get Backlinks from other Web users are having good quality content. When other webmasters find interesting content on your site they establish a link to it to share this information with other users. This is of course natural linking and is the preferred form of links as far as Google is concerned. Having quality relevant and unique content has proven to not only be good for SEO, but it’s also a magnet to attract backlinks from other sites in your niche and beyond.

There are other methods of getting links and its worth your time and effort to explore those other methods.. You need to find blogs or forums related to the content of your website. There you’ll be able to promote your site, but before you do that you must contribute something useful. Read calls & try to give any answer or a comment that’ll help other readers.

Avoid short comments that look like spam. Spend some time searching for blogs or forums that don’t use “nofollow” attribute & has a high PageRank. Links on these sites will help your website achieve higher rankings in search results.
